First day of school
Here I am, all alone no friends, just me by myself looking at the clock waiting for eight o'clock. To me it's sorta frustrating how the clock never seems to like you. It goes slow when you want something to be over and fast when you don't want something to end. As I look around me, people were either talking about what they did over the summer, tuning into their ipods or just lying around. Friends, I had those before in my previous life. Even though it seemed to be years ago before it happened I decided to reminisce of how I ended up here….
In my previous life I was like any other kid, I had friends, I didn't like homework, and I couldn't wait till summer. But, the biggest difference between most kids and me was that I once scored a 140 on an IQ test. I don't know if was out of pure luck or what. Well anyway it was probably a month or two before the end of school it happened. My parents decided to make me take some SSAT to see what others schools I qualify for…man, I hated that thing! I had to basically had spend half a day in a room answering questions in this uncomfortably quite room, get a 5 minute break, then spend another couple hours answering more questions. To me it was the perfect way to waste a good Saturday, but wait there's more, I also had to take an interview with each of the two schools I was applying for.
On my way to the first interview I gave some thought to what the interview was going to be like. As I walked in I remembered having to watch this presentation about how great they were and why I should attend THEIR school rather than any other school. The room was nice though; it kind of looked like a mini Kahala theater. After the presentation was over, I had to walk into a room, which a proctor was waiting in. The room had this natural light feeling to it and it was pretty tall with big windows at the top. As I walked in the proctor welcomed me and offered me a seat across form him on a desk. "Hello, my name is Mr. Dawkins, you must be Casey."
"Yeah" I said as I sat down.
He asked a bunch of questions about my childhood, hobbies and school life, things like; what do you enjoy doing at home, at school, or something like, how would you describe your grades and school work. After jotting down the last few words in his notebook Mr. Dawkins stood up and said, "Ok that’s it for the questions, come with me and we will take a tour." As we were walking around he pointed out various buildings and what I would be doing in each of them. He pointed to a two-story building with a red stripe going down it diagonally and said, "These are where the labs are." Then he pointed to a dome like building and said, "and there is the recreation room."
Finally, after viewing every nook and cranny of the place, we started heading back to the room. What I didn't know was that there was going to be a surprise waiting for me. As started walking back, my proctor stopped at the door and said, "We are now finished, but one more question before I leave, do you remember my name?"
Right then I drew a huge blank in my head. "Man, I am always horrible with names." I thought to myself as looked into his eyes. My mind was racing to try to remember it. From the moment I entered the room till now I tried to remember it all. Still I drew nothing. "Sorry, I guess I forgot." I answered weakly.
"It's Dawkins," he said with this sorta kind of grin on his face.
"Oh, sorry about that." I said as I turned away feeling a little embarrassed.
The next interview was at another really big school with a bunch of buildings. The school was probably a bit bigger than the last one and had that same all-natural lighting feel. The biggest difference was that one section has just been refurbished so one section will look all new while some other parts looked pretty run-down compared to it. There was this one building that stuck me as odd, it was a two-storied building that had a balcony like-structure for each room. This interview went pretty much the same as the last one but this time I didn't have to learn some name and instead I had to write some short essay. As I was writing the essay I thought, "Man, I would much rather be tying to remember some guy's name."
Well, a few weeks later the results were in; my parents were overjoyed with the results, while I…didn't really care much actually, it wasn't like I had hopes for a certain ones.
RING RING RING. The sound of ringing pierced my ears and broke me out of my trance. "Finally" I thought as I walked to my english class. "A206…A206, now where can that be?" I said to myself as I was walking up and down stairs. Getting out the map the school gave me I looked up and down and found out where it was, it was this sorta plain looking building between the library and the Cafeteria. As I walked in there was a few amount of other students sitting at their desk talking to each other. I decided to take a seat that wasn't near anyone else's. Soon the teacher came in, he was a tall slender man, wore a collared shirt and shorts. He sat down and introduced himself, "Hi I'm Mr. Mcmakin and I'll be your English 1 teacher." He than went into what we would be doing this semester and other stuff like class expectations. The first thing he made us do was to write a short essay about ourselves. I decided to write about my previous school, friends and family, my hobbies, which were video games, TV, and puzzles. I never did like writing much so I only wrote about two paragraphs before handing it in to the teacher. The reason why I don't like writing much is because I like things to be simple, I try not over describing something or using complicated words or anything. Well back in my chair I watched bored as other students were practically writing stories of their life. "Why do people try to write so much even though most English teachers would say that length didn't really matter." I thought to myself and laughed a little bit.
In math class though we didn't have to do something like that so I was pretty relived that I didn't have to do much in that class. Between all of my teachers, I was pretty happy with all of them; none of them weren't very strict or took their class too seriously or anything. In social studies the teacher Mr. Lee(A young looking teacher that combed his hair back and wore a suit and tie), had us introduce ourselves to one other person. I was paired with this boy named Daniel. He wasn't too big, but a little bit taller than me, I would say that he was about 5'8 while I was about 5'6. He also wore glasses. While we talked I found out that he was pretty athletic; he was a football player, and basketball player.
"So besides video games and, uh sleeping, do you do anything else?" Daniel asked me.
The words, "Oh, yeah I play football." Fell right out of my mouth. It was a lie, I'm not too sure why I said that, but it was too late, Mr. Lee stopped everyone and had us tell the class one thing about our partner.
Daniel went first when it was our turn, "This is Casey, he is new this year, likes to play videogames, and plays football." Right when he said those words I kinda twitched a little bit, because this lie wasn't even a good one, I probably had the size of football player, but definitely not the mentality. After the bell ringed and everyone started going to their next class, Daniel went up to me and said, "Hey Casey, what class do you have at around 11:00 o'clock?"
Looking at my schedule I said, "I think that's my lunch period…why?"
"There are some people I would like you to meet tomorrow." He said with a grin.
As I was walking towards my next class I had this feeling of regret and thrilled me. The thought of having new friends gave me nothing but delight, but at the back of my head was nothing but regret over the lie I made. Still that didn't bother me much as I walked over to a two-storied building with a stripe going down it.
The day went pretty much the same for the rest of the day, I went to class, the teacher would introduce him/herself and we would do some kind of first day introductory activity either involving us saying something about ourselves or us pairing up with someone and introducing ourselves. Yeah that was about how my first day of school went.
